This project involved supplying a custom solid Blackbutt slab top to sit over a built-in fireplace and cabinetry unit. The goal was to introduce warmth and natural texture into a clean, modern interior using a single continuous piece of timber.
The slab was selected from a larger section, with careful consideration given to grain flow, natural features, and overall balance across the full 3500mm length. Being cut from one continuous slab, the top maintains uninterrupted grain, giving it a consistent and cohesive appearance once installed.
Natural characteristics such as gum veins, knots, and subtle imperfections were retained and stabilised where required, preserving the authenticity of the timber while ensuring long-term durability. The slab was then machined flat, sanded, and prepared for finishing to suit the interior palette.
At 450mm wide, the proportions were designed to sit comfortably above the cabinetry and fireplace, providing a strong horizontal feature without overpowering the space. The thickness (approx. 40mm) gives the piece visual weight while still keeping a refined profile.
This piece highlights the contrast between natural timber and crisp architectural finishes — a simple addition that anchors the entire wall and brings a natural element into the room.
